What is Pool Shock?
Pool shock is a chemical used to burn off
organic and other contaminates which cause eye burn
and cloudy water. Shocking your pool technically means
keeping your chlorine level at 14ppm for 24 hours. You
can shock your pool without chlorine, you would use
pool shock which is an oxidizer. Oxidizers can be used
with most sanitization systems (salt, chlorine,
bromine, etc.) to burn off organic contaminates and
other contaminates in the water without adding an
excessive amount of chlorine to the water. Usually
these products are Shock & Swim products which means
after you shock your pool you can wait an hour then
swim. The chlorine method you should wait until your
chlorine level comes back down to 3-5 ppm before you
swim.

What is an algaecide?
An algaecide is a product which is
specifically formulated to kill algae. There are
algaecides to kill existing algae and algaecides to
prevent algae. Aqua Superstore recommends you use a
preventive algaecide to prevent algae outbreaks which
could cause many problems with swimmers and water
chemistry.

A heater is
the most effective way to
extend your pool season.
There are many types of
pool heaters with
different uses, pro's, and
con's. Please view our
recommendation below:
There are 3
common types of heating:
Heat Pumps, Gas Heaters,
and Solar. Listed below is
an explanation of the
pro's and con's of each
heat source.
Heat Pumps - Heat pumps
are more expensive up
front to purchase
than gas heaters and about
the same price as a
comparable solar system.
Heat pumps are more
efficient than a gas
heater. You can heat your
pool for as little as a $1
a day with a heat pump.
Heat pumps usually carry a
10+ year warranty.
Who should buy a heat pump
- Someone looking to heat
their pool many times
throughout the year.
Gas Heaters - Gas heaters
are less expensive up
front. The life span of a
gas heater is
approximately 6 years. Gas
heaters heat the quickest
but cost the most to run.
Who should buy a gas
heater - Anyone wanting to
heat their pool or spa
quickly only a few times a
year, since it is costly
to use it constantly.
Solar - Solar is great
since it doesn't cost
anything to run. It will
heat your pool by as much
as 10 degrees in most
spring and summer months.
Solar is not a good choice
if you want to swim in the
winter. Solar will extend
your swimming season
approximately 4-9 weeks.
Who should buy solar -
Solar is great for those
wanting to swim in warm
water during spring, summer,
and part of fall.
